The Brandon Artists Guild, 7 Center Street, Brandon, will host an Artist Talk with encaustic painter Edith Beatty on Friday, August 14. Refreshments begin at 6 p.m., followed by the talk at 7 p.m. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

Beatty works in encaustic, an ancient medium in which pigmented beeswax is melted, applied, and fused layer by layer to build luminous, textured surfaces.

"The dance between transparency and opacity is what attracts me to encaustic painting," Beatty says. "The lovely way in which multiple layers of molten, pigmented wax, each fused in the process, conceal and reveal images, color, and textures beneath."

The talk offers visitors a chance to learn about Beatty's process and materials directly from the artist, and to see her work on view in the gallery.

The event is free and open to the public.
