The Pittsford Historical Society will celebrate our nation's 250th birthday with an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., July 4, at Eaton Hall Museum, 3399 Route 7, Pittsford.

Come see a new exhibit featuring Revolutionary War-era artifacts belonging to one of Pittsford's first settlers, Capt. Benjamin Cooley. Items on display include his silver shoe buckles (dating to about 1763), powder horn, and sword belt.

Fort Mott, built in 1777, was commanded by Capt. John Mott. On display are his foot warmer and a kerchief that belonged to his wife, Mary.

A large map identifies the names and locations of many of the 1776 Pittsford settlers. Several of those family names remain in the town, although many others have moved on.

Visitors can also get a close-up view of a period re-enactor’s costume.

Cake and punch will be served, along with period refreshments including cracknels and switchel.
