In the spirit of Spooky Season, we reached out to the community to get your scary stories. Vermont has a rich history of strange areas like the Bennington Triangle, famous spiritualists like the Eddy brothers who lived in Chittenden, and even a ghostly rowboat said to glide across Lake Bomoseen. But Brandon, its neighboring towns, and the people who live here have a rich, eerie history of their own.
The following story was told to the Current by Brian F. via email and is first in a series of submissions from Neshobe Current readers.
I had heard stories about the former Brandon Training School being haunted, but dismissed them. I first noticed something about seven months after moving into an apartment in one of the former buildings with my mother, who had dementia. I would be awakened by the feeling of someone sitting on the bed or tapping my body.
The first night, I pretended to be asleep, hoping my mom would just go back to bed. I gave it a couple of minutes, opened my eyes, and went to her bedroom.
She was sound asleep. I got to thinking about what I had felt.
I lived in the apartment for two years or so, and every night it was the same thing. It always seemed to just stay for a while. It didn't bother me.
Another strange thing was that for a couple of early mornings around six I heard what sounded like lawn mowers. After three days of this I got up and looked around and saw nothing, so I got into the car and drove around the grounds. I never saw anything.
