Rutland parents charged for allegedly hosting underage party that led to DUI death

Kristin Hubert, 48, and John-Henry Hubert, 54, both of Rutland, were indicted earlier this month by a Rutland grand jury on a single charge each of enabling underage consumption of alcohol with death resulting. They are scheduled to appear for arraignment in Rutland County criminal court June 1. The charge carries a potential maximum of five years in prison. Kristin Hubert was superintendent of RNESU from 2022 to 2024, leaving to take a job with VSAC. Before that she had been principal at Northwest Primary School in Rutland. The charges stem from events leading up to the Nov. 10, 2024, crash that killed 17-year-old Macy Piersiak. Piersiak had been a student with the Huberts' daughter, Addison, at Kimball Union Academy in New Hampshire and was one of several girls who had been at a party at the Huberts' house just prior to the crash.

A free health clinic on wheels starts making the rounds in Rutland County

Thanks to a $315,000 federal grant, officials with Rutland County Health Partners said they were able to purchase a special mobile healthcare vehicle. They used it for the first time this month in Wallingford and Fair Haven, said Executive Director Alyssa Scott. "Our volunteer providers were able to see eight or nine patients in Fair Haven in two hours, which was great."

Town visits will continue throughout the summer with scheduled stops in Wells on June 2 and Brandon on June 15.

Camping season kicks off at Vermont state parks

Branbury State Park in Salisbury opened two weeks ago. Groups of college students soaked up the Thursday afternoon sun at the park's waterfront, while the campgrounds across the street remained quiet ahead of the holiday weekend rush.

All 55 Vermont state parks will open this coming holiday weekend, with lots to offer for campers and people who love the outdoors.

"People are showing, I think, a new interest in the natural world and what they can learn in the state park," said Nate McKeen, Vermont State Parks director.

McKeen expects to see many of the 2,000 campsites across the state filled. Branbury is already sold out.
