At a special meeting of the Maclure Library board of trustees on Aug. 14, Elizabeth Soulia signed a contract for the permanent position of library director. The eight members who were present at the meeting voted unanimously to offer her the position. The ninth member, board chair Stephen Belcher, was not present. 

“Elizabeth has demonstrated a strong commitment to our library, our community, and the people we serve,” the board wrote in a press release. 

The position took effect immediately. According to board member Donna Wilson, Soulia will go through a 90-day review period, and clear expectations for this period were laid out in the contract. 

Soulia grew up in Pittsford and has worked at the town library since she was a teenager. Since March she has held the position of Interim Director. She holds a Vermont Certificate of Public Librarianship.  

“I look forward to continuing to serve the community of Pittsford and the library,” Soulia told the Current. 

The decision to offer Soulia the job follows a contentious hiring process that saw extensive involvement from the community as well as Pittsford’s select board. 

Wilson said the board will soon begin discussions to revise its bylaws as well. The next library meeting will take place on Aug. 31 at 6:30 p.m.
