How better to celebrate America’s Independence Day than enjoying a slice of homemade apple pie?  Brandon’s Independence Day Celebration Committee (BIDCC) is in the throes of planning a fun-filled day of events, music, and food to be shared with family, friends, and neighbors on Friday, July 3. The day’s theme is “Celebrate What Unites Us,” and a brand new event this year is an Apple Pie Baking Contest!

Do you love to bake? Have you been told that your apple pie is THE best?  Well, now is the time for you to show off your skills. BIDCC is holding its first Apple Pie Baking Contest, and we want you to join in on the fun! Put on your chef’s hat and start baking. Have your family and friends taste test and offer suggestions until you find the perfect recipe.

A little history: Mom and Apple Pie. It wasn't until World War II that apple pies became stamped into the American consciousness as a “patriotic” pastry. American soldiers during the war commonly told reporters that they defended their nation "for Mom and apple pie." Boom: The apple pie became known as the “all-American” dessert.

Brandon’s contest will be held the afternoon of July 3 behind the Brandon Inn, after the action-packed Swiss Roll Eating Contest and the famous Duck Race. The competition will be limited to 10 bakers. You’ll be required to supply the esteemed judges with a list of ingredients you will use. You will need to bake two identical pies (one for the judges and one to be sold as a fundraiser for BIDCC) in disposable pie plates. Additional information, including how to enter the contest, will be released soon. In the meantime, on your mark, get set, BAKE!
